Managing Fear during the COVID 19 Pandemic
For some COVID hit like a tidal wave, not knowing what to expect, how the virus is contracted, what treatment is available and so many other questions. This brings about uncertainty and can cause fear, anxiety, and stress. It is important to manage our feelings, bearing in mind that each of us responds differently to stress depending on our backgrounds, financial situation, health, and emotional conditions. When we worry, anxiety increases, joy, and time are lost, energy is drained and sleeping patterns change. The key to emotional well-being lies in our mindset and what we choose to focus on.
Our minds react to triggers which in turn causes anxiety and fear. Examples of a trigger can be that of a loss of a job, emotional or physical strain on a relationship, or not being able to connect with close family and friends as often as usual. To alleviate fear and anxiety, start a journal, and ask yourself the following questions. What am I focused on right now? What is consuming my mind most of the time? Is there anything I can do about my current situation? The answers to these questions will assist in identifying fears and triggers. Add your emotional and physical strengths to your journal which helps to shift your thoughts from what you do not have to what you do.
Try brainstorming on what you have and how it can work for you and your family. Choose to focus on what you can control. Another tool is reflecting on past reactions and behaviours. Write down what has happened, how you reacted to it, and what would you like to do differently next time. Your actions determine your reaction and you are the only one in control of this. It’s essential to take care of our bodies such as eating healthy, exercise, getting plenty of sleep, and meditating. These are tools to help manage and cope with any situation such as the COVID 19 pandemic. If you'd like more tools, it can be helpful to talk to a counsellor. Applying these to your life can make a change for the future and the goals you set out.
Stay safe and remember, our thoughts and actions are the choices we make.
